12 January 2010 The new NATO strategy should strengthen defence
commitments for Central and East European countries, Czech senator and
former deputy PM Alexandr Vondra said at the beginning of a conference
on the Alliance´s strategy in Prague.
Czech-born Madeleine Albright, former U.S. secretary of state, takes part in the conference. She is heading the expert group for the preparation of the new strategic concept. "We need a new affirmation, mainly for the new NATO member states, that the commitment on joint defence is taken seriously... This also concerns the defence planning and the deployment of respective capacities to enable a reaction in the case of a crisis," Vondra (Civic Democrats, ODS) said. He said in his opinion NATO lacks, for instance, a thorough defence plan if the new members were exposed to a danger.
