The main Project areas are the overlapping regions surrounding the Europe’s seas. Baltic SeaThe Baltic Sea is in northeastern Europe, bounded by the Scandinavian Peninsula, the mainland of east and central Europe, and the Danish islands. It drains into the Kattegat and the North Sea by way of the Öresund, the Great Belt and the Little Belt. It is linked to the White Sea by the White Sea Canal and to the North Sea by the Kiel Canal.
Littoral countries: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Poland, Russia. Black SeaThe Black Sea is an inland sea bounded by Europe, Anatolia and the Caucasus and is ultimately connected to the Atlantic Ocean via the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas and various straits. The Bosporus strait connects it to the Sea of Marmara, and the strait of the Dardanelles connects it to the Aegean Sea region of the Mediterranean. These waters separate eastern Europe and western Asia. The Black Sea also connects to the Sea of Azov by the Strait of Kerch.
Littoral countries: Turkey, Georgia, Russia, Ukraine, Romania and Bulgaria Caspian SeaThe Caspian Sea is the largest enclosed body of water on Earth by area, variously classed as the world's largest lake or a full-fledged sea between Europe and Asia, bordering Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Iran. variously classed as the world's largest lake or a full-fledged sea. With a basin 750 mi (1,200 km) long and up to 200 mi (320 km) wide and an area of 149,200 sq mi (386,400 sq km), it is the largest inland body of water in the world. Though it receives many rivers, including the Volga, Ural, and Kura, the sea itself has no outlet. It was important as a commercial route in the premodern era, when it formed part of the Mongol-Baltic trade route for goods from Asia. It is now a major source of petroleum. Its numerous ports include Baku in Azerbaijan and Bandar-e Anzalī and Bandar-e Torkaman in Iran.
Littoral countries: Iran, Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan. Mediterranean SeaThe Mediterranean Sea is a sea off the Atlantic Ocean surrounded by the Mediterranean region and almost completely enclosed by land: on the north by Anatolia and Europe, on the south by Africa, and on the east by the Levant. The name Mediterranean means "in the middle of the land". It covers an approximate area of 2.5 million km² (965,000 sq mi), but its connection to the Atlantic (the Strait of Gibraltar) is only 14 km (9 mi) wide. The Mediterranean Sea is an almost completely closed basin where the continuous inflow of surface water from the Atlantic Ocean is the sea's major source of replenishment and water renewal.
Littoral countries: Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Israel and Gaza Strip, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Malta and Cyprus.
Nearby countries: Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Jordania, Saudi Arabia. |
