Kallas visit to Azerbaijan – step towards talks on Common Aviation Agreement ? |

18 Nov, 2011. European Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas is visiting Azerbaijan, on a four-day visit aimed at strengthening EU-Azerbaijan cooperation in the transport area.

A press from the EU Delegation in Baku said: “With a particular focus on launching the negotiations on a Common Aviation Agreement, for which the European Commission has recently received a mandate”. Head of the EU Delegation to Azerbaijan, Ambassador Roland Kobia, suggested prior to the 19-22 November visit that it would “mark a turning point in the process of launching negotiations on a Common Aviation Agreement with Azerbaijan” which would open up andintegrate the aviation markets. Kobia said the Common Aviation Agreement would “create equal conditions of competition allowing new opportunities for consumers and operators, and most importantly lead to high standards in terms of air safety andsecurity as well as air traffic management.”
On his Twitter account (on 19 and 21 November), Kallas described as “very interesting” his talks with President Alijev about the role of Azerbaijan in trans-Caucasian transport links, and as “excellent” his meeting with Transport Minister Mammadov, which mainly focused on aviation and TRACECA. The Commissioner was also dues to meet with Prime Minister Artur Rasiza de Mammadov and Minister of Industry and Energy Natig Aliyev.
